Safety in Special Rooms
SCIENCE LABORATORY SAFETY RULES
A Junyuan Secondary School student should at all times abide by the safety rules and behave in a responsible manner when he/she attends lessons in a science laboratory.
- Do not enter or work in the laboratory unless a teacher is present.
- Do not take any apparatus or chemical out of the laboratory without the permission of a teacher.
- Always work thoughtfully and purposefully. Horseplay, practical jokes and other acts of carelessness are strictly prohibited.
- Do not store, prepare or consume food or drinks in the laboratory.
- Always wear safety spectacles or goggles when mixing, heating or handling chemicals
- Never pipette poisonous substances, hot solutions or corrosive liquids by mouth. Use a pipette filler.
- Do not take chemicals from unlabelled containers. Report unlabelled containers to the teacher.
- Report any damaged equipment, all breakage, accidents and spillage immediately to the teacher.
- Instructions for the performance of an experiment should be thoroughly understood before proceeding with experimentation. In case of any doubt, do not proceed. Ask the teacher.
- Unauthorised experiments are forbidden. If anyone wish to conduct an experiment on his / her own, discuss it with the teacher and obtain permission.
- The storerooms and preparation rooms are out of bounds to all students.
- Keep bench tidy and uncluttered during experiments.
- Chemicals, once removed from the bottles, must not be put back into the bottles unless instructed to do so by the teacher.
- Never use flammable liquids near a naked flame.
- Never taste chemicals or other materials unless specifically directed by the teacher.
- Waste and surplus materials must be disposed of in accordance to instructions. There must be no littering in the laboratory.
- Wash hands thoroughly after all practical work.
- After an experiment, all apparatus must be cleaned and put away, and the bench and sink left clean.
- Exercise proper care and observe all safety precautions for all practical work.
TECHNICAL WORKSHOP SAFETY RULES
A Junyuan Secondary School student should at all-time abides by the safety rules and behave in a responsible manner when he/she attends lessons in a technical workshop.
- No student is allowed to enter the workshop without permission, regardless of whether there is any teacher or instructor inside.
- Workshop practice is to be carried out by students only in the presence of the teacher/instructor.
- Unauthorised persons are not permitted in the workshop.
- Always use the right tool for the right job and return it to its proper place after use.
- Do not use tools that are blunt, worn-out, mushroomed or in poor condition.
- Extreme care should be exercised when handling sharp-pointed or sharp-edged tools.
- All damaged tools must be reported immediately to the teacher or workshop instructor.
- Students should not operate any machine unless they have been taught to do so.
- All students must wear aprons during workshop practice.
- Students are to inform the teacher or instructor if they are not feeling well.
- Injuries, however slight, should be reported at once to the teacher/instructor and student should be given first-aid treatment. The injured student should be given medical attention if necessary.
- All accidents and injuries must be recorded.
- No eating is allowed in the workshop.
- Do not rush. Watch your step while in the workshop.
KITCHEN SAFETY RULES
All students doing Food & Consumer Education must observe the following rules when they attend lessons in the kitchen.
- Students should only enter the food laboratory after the teacher in-charge has given permission.
- All cookery practices should only be carried out in the presence of a teacher.
- Hair should be kept neat at all times. Long hair should be tied up.
- No eating or drinking is allowed except with the teacher’s permission.
- Avoid wastage of food, water and fuel.
- Dispose of all refuse and shut the windows before leaving the food laboratory.
To prevent falls
- Wipe all spills immediately.
- Do not ‘rock’ the stools while sitting.
- Do not run around/play in the laboratory as the floor might be wet and slippery.
- Do not turn the tap to its maximum when washing pots, pans etc. This causes wastage and water may also splash onto the floor, making it wet and slippery.
- Do not sit while cooking as stools which are pulled out, may pose a danger to everyone.
- Pick up any fruit/vegetable peelings on the floor.
To prevent cuts
- Use chopping boards when cutting up ingredients.
- Be careful when handling sharp-pointed cutlery/appliances.
- Wash, dry and store knives separately from other dishes and utensils.
- Sweep and dispose off broken glass immediately.
- Use a towel when picking up broken glass.
- Keep fingers away from beaters and blades in appliances.
- If any classmate accidentally drop knives and other sharp tools, get out of the way. Do not try to catch them.
- Report all breakage immediately to your teacher.
To prevent fires and burns/scalds
- Use salt or baking soda, not water, to put out a grease fire.
- Keep flammable materials away from appliances which produce heat.
- Use a dry potholder to remove hot utensils/pots and pans.
- Place handles of saucepans and frying pans inwards while cooking.
- Tilt the lid away when removing a pan lid. Do not look directly into the pan as the steam may scald your face.
- Wear an oven glove on each hand and use both hands to remove bake ware from the oven.
- Inform the teacher if there is the smell of gas even before the gas stove is lighted.
- Check that all appliances, especially the ovens, have been switched off after finished using them.
- Do not play or tamper with the oven knobs.
To prevent an electric shock
- Before using an appliance, make sure that hands are dry.
- Unplug appliance before bringing metal objects in contact with any working parts.
- Plug the cord into the appliance first, and then into the electrical socket on the wall.
- Inform the teacher if the appliance is faulty or has frayed wires. Do not use the appliance.
To prevent microwave accidents
- Never use a microwave oven if the door appears damaged.
- Never turn on the microwave oven if there is no food inside.
- Do not heat sealed jars, cans or bottles in the microwave oven.
- Do not heat canned foods.
- Use oven gloves/potholders to remove food containers from the microwave oven.
- Remove lids and plastic wrap carefully to avoid steam burns.
- Do not use metal utensils in the microwave oven.
ART ROOM SAFETY RULES
A Junyuan Secondary School student should at all times abide by the safety rules and behave in a responsible manner when he/she attends lessons in a Art room.
- Do not enter or work in the Art Room unless a teacher is present.
- Do not take any tools or art materials out of the room without the permission of a teacher.
- Always work thoughtfully and purposefully. Horseplay, practical jokes and other acts of carelessness are strictly prohibited.
- Do not store, prepare or consume food or drinks in the Art Rooms.
- Keep the Art Room well-ventilated and clean.
- Always wear appropriate protective gears such as aprons when mixing or handling Art materials.
- Wash hands thoroughly after handling Art materials.
- Instructions for Art Activities should be thoroughly understood before proceeding In case of any doubt, do not proceed. Ask the teacher.
- Report any damaged equipment, all breakage, accidents and spillage immediately to the teacher.
- The Art storerooms are out of bounds to all students.
- After each Art Lesson, all art materials must be cleaned and housekeep. The workstation and sink left clean.
- Waste and surplus materials must be disposed of in accordance to instructions. There must be no littering in the Art Room.
- Exercise proper care and observe all safety precautions required for the Art Room.
COMPUTER LABORATORY SAFETY RULES
A Junyuan Secondary School student should at all-time abides by the safety rules and behave in a responsible manner when he/she attends lessons in the computer laboratory.
The student should:
- Know the location of the fire extinguisher and how to use them in case of an emergency.
- Read and understand how to carry out an activity thoroughly before coming to the laboratory.
- Report fires or accidents to your teacher or technical executive immediately.
- Report any broken plugs or exposed electrical wires to your teacher or technical executive immediately.
The student should not:
- Eat or drink in the laboratory.
- Step on electrical wires or any other computer cables.
- Open the system unit casing or monitor casing particularly when the power is turned on. Some internal components hold electric voltages of up to 30 000 volts, which can be fatal.
- Insert metal objects such as clips, pins and needles into the computer or printer casings. They may cause fires.
- Remove anything from the computer laboratory without permission.
- Touch, connect or disconnect any plugs or cables without your teacher or technical executive’s permission.
- Conduct yourself rowdily in the computer laboratory.
